Research conducted in monkeys and published in the journal «Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences» showed that social position affects the immune system.Social Status Affects the Immune System

The research team measured levels of immune cells in macaques monkeys ten groups each of which consisted of five females that were in a different hierarchical position within the group.

Specifically, it appeared that the monkeys that are higher in the hierarchy have more increased activity in the cells associated with immunity.

The investigation found that the levels of the studied cells could lead to the prediction of the position of that monkey in the hierarchy with 80% accuracy.

The severity varies from small black spots on the forehead and nose to the heavy large cysts that can be spread across the face, chest and back, that usually leave scars.

Today we have many weapons to deal with acne, but first we must bust three widespread myths associated with acne that make the lives of patients and the work of dermatologists very difficult.

Myth #1: What you eat affects the incidence and severity of acne
We all know that various foods have been blamed for worsening of acne, featuring chocolate and nuts. Despite the rumors that last for decades, studies have shown no real relationship, so moderate consumption of chocolate and nuts is allowed freely. A category of food that has come under the microscope of researchers in recent years are dairy products from cow’s milk.

Researchers claim that these products contain elevated androgen levels because of forcing animals to continuously produce milk. These androgens contribute to worsening of acne. Women seem to be affected particularly because they have low levels of endogenous androgens in the body. Although these studies are in progress, already some dermatologists recommend total abstinence from cow’s milk and products for at least one semester.

Myth #2: If I wash more often with stronger cleaners pimples will go away
Washing the face and / or the body helps to open the pores and reduce annoying sometimes oily skin.

Excessive use of strong cleaning products brings the opposite effect and destroys the natural protective lipid film and the skin making it vulnerable to external harmful factors and stimulates reactive hypersecretion of sebum that aggravates acne.

The best that a person with acne can do is to obtain a medicinal cleanser that respects the pH of the skin and removes sebum without irritating the skin and use it reasonably, twice a day in the morning and the evening to prepare the skin for local drug therapies.

Myth #3: Acne ends at the end of adolescence
Although acne is a condition that usually appears during adolescence, it is wrong to promise that the pimples will go away with adulthood.

Particularly women, may not develop acne at puberty but later, often around the age of 25 years and a maximum of 10% continue to show symptoms until the fifth decade of their life.

Several times the reason behind acne is a disorder that affects the sex hormones (like polycystic ovary syndrome) or taking certain medications, but in many cases we can’t find hormonal abnormalities in blood tests and must consider the increased sensitivity of the skin receptors, the androgens or other causes that should be investigated by the dermatologist.

Do you sleep more than usual? Do you feel sadness, pessimism and your mind is constantly plagued by negative thoughts? Are you suffering from depression?

Depression is a disease that affects the brain and must be treated early before it progresses and causes physical problems (eg cardiovascular). That is why it is very important not to confuse the simple “bad mood” with depression, to identify its symptoms as quickly as possible and seek medical help.

How will one know they suffer from depression? The change in eating habits and the consequent weight fluctuations, the lack of interest in things and activities that we once enjoyed and the difficulty in concentrating at work are some of the symptoms that should alarm us. Also, the dark thoughts and prolonged sadness without a cause are very serious signs that should make us think.

The recognition of the problem is the most important step for patients with depression because only then will they make the decision to seek medical help. It is noteworthy that the rates of depression (5% -10% of the general population) in recent years are rapidly increasing.

Things are often much simpler than we think. You don’t always need an energy drink. Simply because we can play the music loud and move to the beat.

It is no coincidence that at the sound of some strong beat songs, many of you have increased the speed on the treadmill. That’s certainly not a coincidence because with the right music you can increase the intensity of your workout.

It is significant that studies have even shown that music during cycling increased the efficiency of those who participated. It worked as an incentive to exercise even harder.

Experts also noted that on strength exercises for the legs, the most powerful music proved more beneficial.

They believe, based on research, that the fastest tracks encourage practitioners to increase the intensity of their workout more than slower tracks.

It now makes perfect sense when you see the regulars at the gym always listening to their mp3s.

May not help you lose weight
The low-fat, lean foods we choose in an effort to maintain stable or lower our body weight, may have the opposite of the desired effect because they confuse the body, according to a new study.

When tasting a lite snack, the body prepares to receive a lot of calories, but ends up running on very little – and this causes confusion and makes it seek more food.

This finding partly explains why obesity is still spreading in the Western world, despite the extensive use of lite foods by millions of people worldwide.

The substitution of part of the food with foods that have similar taste but fewer or zero calories, looks like a very sensible approach to weight loss.

However, many different biological mechanisms are factored in. These substituents mimic the taste of fat, but do not provide calories – and this causes confusion in the body.

The various flavors naturally stimulate your body to expect to be supplied with calories, which it will then digest.

When this does not happen, the body perceives it as a problem of the control mechanism of food intake and activates other mechanisms to compensate for this dysfunction.

Researchers studied the variations in body weight in a group of rats. Half the animals ate full-fat bread sticks for 28 days, while the rest ate normal breadsticks for a few days and then began to feed on the lite version. At the end of four weeks, the rats that had changed diet weighed more and had more body fat than than those who ate low fat bread sticks until the end of the study.

The researchers noted that even though this study was done in animal models, there are many similarities with humans. The findings call into question the effectiveness of using fat substitutes in a long-term strategic control of body weight.

Low-intensity electromagnetic fields contribute to the reduction of tumor
New York
The first messages from clinical trials of a new form of cancer therapy using low intensity electromagnetic fields are very encouriging, according to a study published in British Journal of Cancer.
The new technique has managed to shrink tumors in patients with liver cancer.

Researchers from the U.S., France, Switzerland and Brazil, led by Professor Boris Pasco, University of Alabama, are optimistic that the new method in the future may be a new therapeutic technique. They note that the method is still in its infancy and will require several more years of clinical testing and refinement.

The treatment is applied in a perfectly controlled clinical environment, where in the presence of medical personnel, patients enter in the oral cavity an “antenna” (spoon-shaped), which transmits low electromagnetic fields in their body. The session, when applied three times a day, managed to increase the life expectancy of patients with advanced liver cancer and tumors were reduced, while the surrounding healthy cells remained unaffected.

According to scientists, the new method is well tolerated for long periods and can be combined with other anticancer therapies.

Dr. Pasko has already secured approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to conduct clinical trials on large patient groups, while he is in negotiations with companies in various countries to provide funding for future research .

In 2009, Dr. Pasko and his colleagues had published a study in the journal Journal of Experimental and Clinical Research, which showed that low level electromagnetic fields at specific frequencies (0,1 Hz to 114 KHz) slowed down the growth of cancer cells in some patients. Different kinds of cancer responded to electromagnetic fields of different frequencies.

The exact biological mechanism beneath this relationship is not yet known. One hypothesis is that electromagnetic fields interfere and modify the activity of genes in cancer cells. In some cases this leads to block the division and proliferation of these cells, causing the tumor to stop growing or even start shrinking gradually.

Dr. Pasko is optimistic that the new technique will be used in the future not only on liver tumors but for the treatment of breast cancer and possibly other forms of the disease.

The new method is a sensation, given the concern that electromagnetic fields from mobile phones and the pillars of the electric current are thought to cause cancer. The researchers stress, however, that in their experiments, the intensity of the radiation fields are 100 to 1,000 times lower than that of a mobile phone.

Let’s face it. It is not difficult to start a fitness program on a regular basis. As a matter of fact, most of you have succeeded more than once.
The problem is that the initial enthusiasm is tempered, we get distracted by other things going on in our lives especially if we do not see tangible results soon enough and as a result we give up.
However, many people manage to continue exercising. What’s their secret?

• Good form
• Feelings of Wellness
• Energy
• Enjoyment of the exercise
• Exercise a priority
• Better sleep
• Feeling of alertness
• Weight Control
• Physical appearance

How can one remain loyal to a workout?

By having a variety of activities you enjoy. And remember that there is no rule that forces you to go to the gym or buy expensive equipment.

Having a variety of activities such as weight training, walking, jogging, tennis, cycling and aerobics will help towards having something to do regardless of weather or time of day.

Promise to someone else that you will exercise.

The social dimension of the exercise may prove important. You can walk along with someone else or do workouts together. Encouragement and support by someone else is another factor that also gives you a boost.

Make exercise a priority.

It must be something non-negotiable. The advantage is that friends and relatives realize that it’s a part of your identity.

Exercise, the first thing you do in the morning
Anything may sabotage your decision to do morning exercise. You can skip it and by waking up early without having to go to the gym will energize you.

Or work out turning home from work
The next best thing is to workout after returning from work. Do not go home. There are many who will go home and then change clothes and go out for gymnastics.

Exercise even if you’re tired
Chances are that you will feel better after exercise. Exercise gives you energy. Breathe deeply and help the body make better use of oxygen. You will experience euphoria during and after exercise.

Reward yourself
You may think that you don’t deserve recognition for something you should be doing anyway, or that if you snap your trousers without an effort that will be rewarding. But how inspiring can that be?

Experts find it difficult to change behavior and that the reward motivates us. So, decide on a goal and reward and work in this direction. Do whatever suits you.

Walk or Walk Your Dog
If you enjoy walking and have not exercised for some time, 10 minutes three times a day will give you 30 minutes.

Walk at least 10,000 steps a day. Nobody starts with many steps. Determine what is the average of your daily steps and next week try to walk 300 steps more each day. Extend your steps each week.

You can also walk along with your dog.

Record your activity
Write things that are important to you. This could be, how long you practice every day, how many steps you did, how far you run or bike, how much you weigh, etc.

Understand all the indicators of progress
It is pleasant when your clothes are a better fit and when you lift more weight or when you exercise more without getting exhausted.

But there are other indicators of progress as
• To sleep better
• Think more clearly
• Have more energy
• Understand that your muscles are not sore after heavy work
• Listen to your doctor congratulate you on improved cholesterol, blood pressure, bone density, triglycerides and blood sugar.

Users of portable MP3 players enjoy better sound quality than they did previously with Walkmans, but according to research scientists, especially young people are at risk of serious hearing damage.

The researchers, led by Professor Xavi Moutsnik School of Medicine Tel Aviv University, who published the study in the journal International Journal of Audiology, estimate that one in four teenagers are at risk of premature hearing loss due to the continued use of portable digital devices at high volume.

The scientists studied the auditory habits of young people making the relevant acoustical measurements, and concluded that this new fashion trend has clearly harmful consequences. “In ten or twenty years it will be too late when you realize that a whole generation of young people suffer from hearing problems much earlier than expected due to normal aging”, said Dr. Moutsnik.

According to experts, hearing loss, caused by continuous exposure to loud noise or music is a slow and gradual process. People are not usually able to understand the damage they cause to themselves unless many years go by.

Those teenagers that make extended use of the MP3 today may find that they have trouble hearing as soon as 30 or 40, ie much earlier than previous generations.

The researchers focused their investigation on some 300 young people aged 13 to 17 years old. As shown by the survey, eight out of ten teenagers regularly use portable digital devices for listening to music, one in five hears one to four hours a day and almost one in ten over four consecutive hours. Overall, scientists estimate that about one in four young people (25%) faces a serious risk of premature hearing loss.

European regulations limit the maximum output of MP3 devices to 100 decibels, but some models go as loud as 129. Scientists recommend that public authorities, teachers, parents and of course young people themselves to take the issue of potential hearing damage more seriously . Among other things, larger headphones that do not enter into the cavity of the ear, but cover the ear on the outside, are considered safer. Also, listening to music less frequently at a lower volume are important precautionary measures.

It is true that in recent years issues related to diet and weight loss are among the most sought after. One of the smartest commercial fabrications of the “weight loss industry” are the unorthodox diets (fad diets). These diets are based on two principles:

1. The imbalance in macro-nutrient ingredients summarized in the following characteristics: Very low-carbohydrate, high in protein, low in fat.

2. In eating or avoiding certain foods from your daily diet.

Famous examples are: the Stilman diet in 1967, the Atkins diet in 1972, the Beverly Hills diet in 1980, in 1981 the Cabbage Soup diet and in 1995 the Zone diet.

The additional data characterizing the fad diets are:

- The questionable credibility of the author.

- The diet promotes:Magic and miracle foods, Quick Weight Loss, Not exercising, Strict menu, “Good” and “bad” foods.

- Diet is too good to be true!

What should be clear is that there are no studies to support these diets. In contrast, these diets are characterized by the use of empirical evidence rather than concrete facts to prove their effectiveness and lack of any criticism from colleagues.

The side effects listed after the application of such diets is headaches, dizziness, nausea, lack of concentration and more severe as ypercholisteroloaimia, hypertriglyceridemia, anemia, lack of vitamins and minerals which can lead to thinning hair, breaking nails and more systematic problems.

Weight loss usually occurs in fad diets due to fluid loss and muscle tissue, not fat loss. Another major disadvantage of these diets is that the person takes wrong eating habits and is not trained in a universally healthy eating way of life. The result, after completion of the nutritional program, is that the person reverts to their old habits and regain the lost weight, sometimes even more.

It is scientifically documented that the most effective weight loss program is the one that combines a balanced diet, changing eating habits and regular exercise.

Following the diet suggested by a friend, an acquaintance or just a diet that has fallen into our hands, is very likely not gong to have the desired effect, but may create problems in the body and our health.

Who should we contact to have a correct and valid information?

When we start a diet, always seek the advice of a specialist (a dietitian-nutritionist scientist) who will develop personalized dietary recommendations based on age, sex , history, habits and particular needs of each individual.

Unfortunately due to lack of state controls diets are suggested by people who do not have that capacity, such as gymnasts, often because they have some education they think they know the science of nutrition, from beauticians, physiotherapists, acupuncturists, doctors without equivalent academic training and others.

There are known supplement companies that use accountants, economists, etc. to practice the profession of dietician to promote their products. The correct and accurate research is the best approach before choosing the appropriate scientist.

After traffic congestion and a hectic and exhausting day at work, the need arises to get rid of all the stress after returning home. To enjoy a nice evening, take a quarter of an hour and run a few relaxation exercises. These little exercises are not a waste of time, they will make you feel more powerful, more active. Here are the 5 steps to follow.

1 – Free your Body
2 – Breathe
3 – Turn off the image
4 – Think Positive
5 – Stretch

1 – Free your Body

Bras, shoes, tight skirt, tie … begone! Remove anything that compresses the body and restore its freedom. Remove anything that can force your breathing.

2 – Breathe

Breathe fully and deeply through your belly, by putting your hand on the abdomen. It should rise over your breathing. Attention to the expulsion of the air: People tend to take a lot of air and release too fast. It takes a count to two to inspire and a count to eight to expire.
3 – Turn off the image

Close your eyes. 90% of the information is passing through your eyes. If they are shut, the brain regenerates.

4 – Think Positive

Lie back and think of something pleasant. No censorship, no one will check what goes through your head. Banish negative images. You can remember the positive of the day: enhancing stimulant moments, the memory of a smile. When we think of something pleasant, our body secretes endorphins, hormones of the range of fun.

5 – Stretch

The stress of the day has tightened your muscles, so they should be stretched. Pull the arms up. Enlarge yourself smoothly.
